I am Cephas, a 3rd year student studying BSc Product Design & Technology at Bournemouth University. I am 6 months into my placement year at medmix as a product design intern.
It's a great placement which has me fully immersed into the company, the team, and the projects. I work closely with experienced designers in a community of technical driven people who actively engage with me to improve my understanding throughout these processes.
In my time at medmix I am experiencing everything first hand. Topics such as design ideation, CAD modelling, prototyping and test on new product launches to DFM and making sure the parts “you” designed are ready and suitable for manufacture. Speaking of which, you work on the same site to where the products are made, a unique experience to witness the full product development cycle.
Design. Working alongside engineers from a variety of industrial and commercial design backgrounds has helped me gain great insight into good design methodologies These have helped shape how I tackle a design problem and create viable design concepts that solve genuine design issues.
Manufacturing. Spending time in a factory has taught me a lot about mass manufacturing processes, and the design requirements for the types of manufacturing methods used in this industry.
Communication. Medmix empowers its interns to actively contribute to projects (not just assisting the design team on the side). As such I engage in design decisions and host meetings with the team to talk about a range of other technical topics. Business communication is a key skill in which I’ve been very happy to grow during my time at medmix.
A perfectly balanced placement where you experience and grow every type of Product Design skill. It compliments, reinforces and grows the topics I study at university and will be invaluable for my future career in design and engineering. I thoroughly recommend it!
