Following the press release about the donation of Reveal to Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), this article looks at the Reveal Academic Community in general and goes on the explain about our motivation behind engaging so actively with academia.
Reveal can now be found in universities around the globe, with hundreds of students having access to the industry-leading seismic processing software. Reveal is being deployed as a teaching tool during taught courses, for students to use during project work and as a research tool.
It is hard to measure the impact providing Reveal to institutions has, however we do get some idea when we talk to current and previous beneficiaries. Having students extol the benefits of the ease of use and the speed of pick-up, or how they really enjoyed a specific feature really is a common theme.
Students beginning their careers with Reveal experience is a good starting point, not only in terms of having had the chance to experience seismic processing and imaging in university without unnecessary software encumberments, but we and many of our energy company Reveal customers also benefit from having a talent pool already versed in the software.

The courses and projects that Reveal is being used on are almost as diverse as the geographical locations of the universities. Students are using Reveal to process data from geothermal projects, deep earth geological investigations, high-resolution data for near surface assessment as well as more standard hydrocarbon targets.
At Shearwater, we get a great sense of pride seeing students present their Reveal work knowing we played a small part in helping them during their courses, these presentations could be at the end of course sessions or on a larger stage at a major international conference. Research students are often using Reveal to process data for publishing in peer reviewed journals around the globe.
