Why work for us?

A supportive culture

We are proud of the many learning and development opportunities available to our staff members. These range from professional development schemes and mentoring programmes to training courses and funding for educational qualifications.

We also ensure that our diversity and inclusion policies come through in everything that we do.

We are actively taking steps to ensure that the next generation of graduates and apprentices, in addition to our more experienced employees, have every opportunity available to them to gain an exciting and rewarding career.

We have a number of internal networks and employee groups, which offer an opportunity to meet with other people from similar backgrounds. These include LGBTQ+, a women’s network, and ENACT (ethnicity, nationality and culture).

Leading the world in sustainable energy

You’ll join an organisation that’s carrying out cutting-edge research for the future of the world’s energy.

We are pioneering fusion energy from our sites at Culham Science Centre, Oxfordshire and Rotherham Fusion Technology Facility, South Yorkshire.

Our research spans a wide range of disciplines and facilities.

  • We operate the Joint European Torus (JET), which is the focal point of the European fusion research programme, and the UK’s national fusion experiment, MAST Upgrade.
  • We have leading facilities in robotics, materials research, fusion technology and fuel research.
  • UKAEA manages the STEP research programme, the UK’s plan to build a prototype fusion power plant.
