Step-by-step

Application Process

We know applying for a new role can feel daunting, so we've outlined our recruitment process to help you understand what to expect.

Apply Online

Find a role on our Gradcracker Hub and submit your application through our ATS, SmartRecruiters. You'll be asked to answer a few screening questions and upload your CV. We typically review applications after the closing date, although we may close some roles sooner due to high demand.

First Stage Virtual Interview

Successful candidates will be invited to a first-stage interview with hiring teams, typically lasting around 45-60 minutes. This will include a mix of behavioural and technical questions relevant to the role, as well as an opportunity for you to learn more about UKAEA and ask any questions.

Final Stage Assessment Centre

If you're successful at the first stage, you'll be invited to attend a final-stage assessment centre at our Culham campus.

The assessment centre typically includes:

  • A face-to-face panel interview and a short presentation
  • A group exercise with other candidates

This is an opportunity for us to learn more about your skills and potential, while helping you gain a deeper understanding of the role and life at UKAEA.

Pre-Employment Checks

If you're successful and receive an offer from UKAEA, we'll need to complete a few standard pre-employment checks before confirming your employment:

  • Right to Work: UKAEA welcome applications from candidates who have the right to work in the UK. We are a licensed UK sponsor and able to sponsor eligible candidates under the Skilled Worker visa route, where the role and candidate meet the relevant UK immigration requirements. Sponsorship is not guaranteed and will be considered subject to eligibility, the applicable immigration requirements, and our internal approval process. Where a candidate's existing right to work is time-limited, we will discuss the applicable immigration position with the candidate as UKAEA need to ensure right to work can be met for the duration of the Graduate programme. Applicants should clearly indicate on their application what their right to work status is.
  • Security Screening: All successful candidates undergo pre-employment security checks.
  • References: We'll request references once you've accepted a formal offer.
  • Apprenticeship Eligibility: If you're applying for an apprenticeship, we'll verify that you meet the required educational and eligibility criteria for the programme.

Reasonable Adjustments

If you require any reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process, please let us know. We'll work with you to ensure you have the support you need.
