Graduate Apprentice Engineer - Applied Science

About us

Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organisation of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.

Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance. We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments, and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems.

We perform research, mathematical modelling, software development, and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants, and automotive and airborne vehicles.

Military, government, corporate, and academic clients value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.

The Role

A degree apprenticeship gives you the ability to work and gain invaluable industry experience while earning a salary at the same time as studying towards an undergraduate degree. Apprenticeships are a practical way to obtain a degree in a real-life work setting.

We currently have a position for a Graduate Apprentice Engineer to work within our Modelling & Simulation team, based at our Dalgety Bay office, Scotland. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team, enabling you to achieve your goal of becoming an engineer while working and studying for a fully funded 4-year Degree Apprenticeship, with our University Partner, Heriot-Watt.

The course will be under a Mechanical Engineering degree framework and will be a combined day release and study support programme, with the remaining time spent within the office environment, consolidating your learning and supporting the modelling and simulation analysis team.

"Since joining Thornton Tomasetti, I have been impressed with the different sectors within the company and the endless possibilities that are available.  As an apprentice it is important to continue to learn and gain experiences through the course and I feel that Thornton Tomasetti has allowed me to do so. These experiences are what makes the difference between a graduate apprenticeship and just going to university."

"Thornton Tomasetti gave me the opportunity to pursue a Graduate Apprenticeship in Design & Manufacture which offers employees the chance to study towards a degree while working full time. It is definitely demanding and fast paced but it also allows me to contextualise University problems with real life scenarios and vice-versa. Getting involved in the scheme has also given me the chance to learn and apply new skills in my current role, while developing the skills I have been building over the years."
