I have been with National Gas for 10 months.
As an Innovation Graduate, I get to work on many different and exciting projects, which deliver strategic benefits to the business. Primarily my role involves supporting the delivery of the RIIO – 2 business plan. This involves scoping and writing statement of works that are geared to providing answers to questions around our asset development and mitigation for hydrogen. Additionally, I manage and lead projects to ensure successful delivery of outputs to time, cost and quality.
First thing I do in the day is to create a to-do list of activities for the day. I go through the previous days’ to-do list and mock up a new one for the day to ensure I have captured key tasks that need to be completed by the end of the day. I prioritise these tasks by order of importance, urgency, and ease of completion. Second activity of the day is emailing correspondence. Flicking through the mailbox to ensure I have attended to any queries, request for information, correspondence on a particular subject (making sure there is no important information that requires my attention that is not actioned).
Then comes the “doing.” Writing scopes, statements of work, GAP Analysis, managing risk registers, preparing a slide deck to disseminate information, research, coordinating activities, stakeholder management, etc.
Go for a lunch break at 12pm, take a walk then return to work. It depends on what tasks need to be done on the day, as every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and work on something new.
Working with internal and external stakeholders to provide solutions to difficult questions is by a mile the most enjoyable part of my role. I get to be involved in the solution making process, to learn from experienced individuals within the business and expand my network all at the same time, it’s genuinely such a fun part of my role.
A graduate programme is a really great experience. I would advise anyone who wants the opportunity of learning, honing their craft and experiencing different parts of the business before settling down on a particular role, then a Graduate programme is indeed one of the best decisions you could make.
