I have been with National Gas since September 2022, so nearly a year and a half.
My main tasks consist of maintaining electrical assets on the gas compressor station, maintaining electrical assets on the gas network and lots of fault finding which is always interesting. However, I also get involved with the mechanical side of things if there is a job that requires additional helping hands, as a big part of the job is being a team player.
Every day at the compressor station is different as there are always new challenges to tackle. Most mornings start by checking the computer screens in the control room to see if any faults or alarms have occurred over night. If there are any faults, the team will work together to fix the problem. A daily walk round the compressor station is also carried out so that you are aware of the overall state of the plant and to see if there are any problems with the assets. Once this has been completed, I will crack on with electrical maintenance or installations so gas can be pumped safely from the compressor site across the UK. In terms of the college side of things, all apprentices in my year group attend the same college and this means that I stay in a hotel for a week and may have to return the following week. However, I got used to staying away from home very quickly as I have good friends on the apprenticeship.
The thing that I enjoy most is that there are always new problems to solve as a team and that every day is different. Being a part of a knowledgeable team is enjoyable as I am constantly learning new skills.
I highly recommend an apprenticeship with National Gas as there are so many opportunities to be explored within the company which give you the chance to develop your skill sets.
