Our team delivers a diverse portfolio of projects that help protect communities, improve environmental resilience, and support the sustainable management of water and natural resources. Our work includes flood and coastal erosion risk management programmes, Reservoirs Act compliance, flood mapping updates, fish passage improvements, and river restoration.

Key Responsibilities

As a Graduate Hydraulic Modeller, you will contribute to projects involving hydraulic modelling at local, catchment, and national scales, covering a range of flood risk sources, including fluvial, coastal, and surface water flooding.

Working alongside experienced specialists, you will develop your technical knowledge and practical modelling skills while contributing to projects that make a meaningful difference to communities and the environment.

Are you looking to build a career in hydraulic modelling and flood risk management?

This is an excellent opportunity to develop your expertise in hydrology, hydraulic modelling, and flood risk assessment within a supportive and technically accomplished team.

Through Binnies' Graduate Training Scheme, you will gain practical project experience, access to experienced professionals, and support from senior mentors and technical specialists who will help you develop your skills and progress towards professional accreditation.

We encourage our graduates to continually improve their technical capabilities, build their professional confidence, and work towards chartership with a relevant professional institution, such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

You will join a collaborative team that encourages learning, innovation, and professional growth, underpinned by our ENGAGED cultural values.

As a Graduate Hydraulic Modeller, you will support the delivery of hydraulic modelling and flood risk management projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Hydrological analysis: Undertake hydrological assessments and prepare appropriate inputs for hydraulic models.
  • Survey specification: Prepare scopes of work for topographic and river channel surveys to support modelling activities.
  • Hydraulic modelling: Develop hydraulic models using survey data and other relevant information, and check and review models produced by third parties.
  • Model validation: Validate hydraulic models against observed and gauged data to assess their performance and reliability.
  • Flood risk assessment: Appraise flood risk management options, assess residual risks, and contribute to the development of appropriate solutions.
  • Technical reporting: Prepare clear, concise, and technically accurate modelling reports that communicate findings and recommendations effectively.
  • Planning support: Prepare Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Flood Consequence Assessments (FCAs) to support planning applications.
  • Team collaboration: Work effectively within a multidisciplinary and geographically distributed team, managing time and resources to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Professional development: Take an active role in developing your technical expertise, progressing your career, and working towards a relevant professional qualification.

About You

We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic graduate with a strong interest in hydraulic modelling, hydrology, and flood risk management. You will be keen to learn, develop your technical skills, and contribute to projects that benefit communities and the environment.

You will ideally have:

Academic qualifications: A degree at 2:1 level or above in Geography, Engineering, Environmental Science, or another relevant discipline. Other relevant technical qualifications may also be considered.

  • Postgraduate study: A relevant postgraduate qualification would be advantageous.
  • Hydrological and hydraulic knowledge: An understanding of fundamental hydrological and hydraulic principles and their practical application.
  • Hydraulic modelling: Awareness of hydraulic modelling software, such as Flood Modeller (FM), TUFLOW/ESTRY, and HEC-RAS.
  • Hydrological assessment: Awareness of rainfall-runoff methods, such as ReFH2, and statistical approaches to hydrological analysis.
  • GIS skills: Knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS), preferably using ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Planning and policy awareness: An awareness of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and Planning Policy Wales in relation to flood risk assessment and management.
  • Programming skills: Knowledge of programming or macro writing, such as Python scripting, would be beneficial.
  • Communication and organisation: The ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and manage competing priorities.
  • Professional ambition: A strong desire to learn, develop technical expertise, and work towards professional accreditation.

A valid UK driving licence would be advantageous to support travel to project sites.

Above all, we value curiosity, initiative, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes for our clients and the communities we serve.
