About Us

What can you achieve at MI5, MI6 and GCHQ?
Surprise yourself!

MI5, MI6 and GCHQ collaborate to counter threats such as terrorism, cyber-crime and espionage to protect the UK from harm. MI5’s mission is to protect people and places here in the UK. MI6 do the same, by countering threats to the UK from overseas. And GCHQ work to keep the country safe both in the real world and online.

Each organisation has a different focus, but one thing we share is a love for the latest technologies. Developing and working with the kind of tech that doesn’t exist anywhere else, we can stay one step ahead of our adversaries. And to remain cutting-edge organisations we rely on peoples’ passion for STEM.

Talk to anyone about the Intelligence Agencies and chances are the first thing that comes to mind are the spies we see in film and television. The reality is quite different. We are more diverse than ever, and welcome people from a whole mix of different backgrounds.

There’s a variety of different roles and pathways to join for people with equally varied experiences, insights and perspectives. That way, we can best represent the country we serve.

The facts
Since March 2017, MI5 and the police have together disrupted 43 late-stage attack plots. Our vital work together has saved numerous lives.
At MI5, we have a museum full of artefacts from our history in Thames House, as well as a library with books on intelligence, terrorism, espionage and cyber amongst other things.
MI6 moved to its current headquarters in Vauxhall, London in 1994. The building was designed with 1930s architecture in mind, for example Battersea Power Station.
The head of MI6 is known to only write in green ink. This is a tradition which dates back to the very first ā€˜C’, Sir Mansfield Smith-Cumming, a naval officer who set up the intelligence service in 1909.
Our main GCHQ headquarters is based in Cheltenham and when it was being built between 2000 and 2003 it was the largest construction site in Europe.
GCHQ works closely with government and law enforcement partners, using innovative technology to reduce the harm that serious and organised crime causes, both in the real world and online.
