I first was aware of the finance graduate program after I saw the position advertised on google. I had just finished my degree in Accounting and Finance at Southampton University and the role seemed like a perfect fit.
It offered the opportunity to rotate across multiple finance departments whilst simultaneously studying for a CIMA qualification. I applied for the job by uploading my CV and a cover letter and I was pleased to have been offered a first-round interview.
The interview consisted of a series of competency-based questions and a short presentation on something I was passionate about. I chose origami! Luckily, I made it to the next stage where I was asked to prepare a presentation based on an acquisition scenario. That went well and I was thrilled to be offered a position on the graduate programme.
I have had an amazing experience so far! I have had the opportunity to work with multiple teams and be involved in many projects. It has boosted my confidence and given me a great foundation to my career.
There have been challenges, but when working with such supportive people these are easily overcome. Also, I have progressed with my CIMA qualification with only 4 exams to go. I have now reached the end of the 3-year graduate programme, and I’m pleased to say I have been offered a position working in treasury.
One of the main benefits, is that you are exposed to multiple finance areas. This for me included business programme finance, operations as well as central finance.
When you are fresh out of university it can be difficult to know what direction you want to go in. By completing the rotations, it gave me a better idea of what work I enjoyed and was good at. Additionally, it enabled me to develop a wide network of people who are a great support system.
My advice would be to say yes to as many opportunities as you can! Don’t be afraid to speak out and get involved as that is the best way to learn. Also, if you are studying for CIMA work life balance is crucial for your success.
