Nuclear Graduates was created and established by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) in 2008. The NDA is a non-departmental public body created by the Energy Act 2004 to lead the clean-up and decommissioning work at their 17 sites on behalf of government.
As owners of one of the largest nuclear decommissioning and remediation programmes in Europe, the NDA’s main priority is to lead the work across the NDA group and develop the strategy for how it should be carried out. They also play an important role in supporting government’s aspiration for the UK to be a global leader in the civil nuclear sector.
A wide range of organisations sponsor graduates throughout their two-year programme and following completion of the programme, will support graduates in finding a permanent role within their organisation. The Nuclear Graduates programme is delivered by the People & Skills Team at Energus, on behalf of the NDA.

No, Nuclear Graduates vacancies are advertised by discipline, you should apply to the discipline most appropriate to your degree. Please only submit one application, where multiple applications are made only one will be taken forward to be considered for any suitable roles. Whilst completing the application form you will have the opportunity to select additional roles/discipline of interest should your first choice be unsuccessful.

The programme lasts for two years and is completed after graduation. You will undertake several secondments across your two-year programme, along with an individualised programme of CPD and training.

Yes, the Nuclear Graduates programme enables graduates to gain an insight into the nuclear sector by undertaking a number of secondments with different organisations across the UK. This may mean having to relocate across the country depending on where your sponsor and host companies are based. Energus works with a company called Pro Tenant to support with relocation - more info will be provided during the onboarding process.
This is dependent on who your sponsoring organisation is. Your first secondment will always be with your sponsor so as mentioned above, you may need to relocate. Your second and third secondments will be identified during the discussions with your line manager, mentor and sponsoring organisation.
Company Lead – Your contact within your sponsoring organisation, supporting you to understand your sponsor and their expectations of your development.
Line Manager – Will support you in your employment and secondment. It is their role to support your day-to-day work and facilitate your progression throughout the programme.
Mentor – Your sponsor will also allocate you a mentor who will advise and support you throughout the programme, particularly in relation to your professional accreditation. Your mentor will support you in developing evidence to support competency achievements and contribute to your professional development programme.
Senior Co-Ordinator – A role specifically designed to bring together relevant technical advice and effective relationship management with each professional institute, the Senior Co-ordinator will work with mentors to support your professional development. The Senior Co-ordinator is responsible for securing an overview of both the programme and those graduates from their specific discipline. Their involvement facilitates the maintenance of institute standards.
Energus People & Skills Team – With a breadth of experience in the delivery of high-quality Apprenticeship and Graduate Development Programmes, the team are committed to ensuring that sponsors receive services delivered to the highest standards, and that Graduates and Apprentices are supported to become the nuclear professionals of the future.
Pastoral Support – The People & Skills Team has numerous Level 3 Mental Health First Aiders and an assigned pastoral and safeguarding lead.
Buddy – you will be assigned a ‘buddy’ which is a current graduate who is one year into their programme. They will provide practical guidance and support on day-to-day programme and practical issues such as housing, relocation, training opportunities etc.
Pro Tenant – with over 40 years of experience and understanding of the challenges faced when relocating, Pro Tenant effectively provide support and advice that will enable you to locate and secure a home within an easy commuting distance of your work location and within your allocated rental budget.
