To achieve a BEng in Building Services Design Engineering.

Before making an application, please browse all apprenticeship opportunities available as we will only accept one application per candidate. Once you have made an application you will not be able to make changes to your selection or make a new application.

We have opportunities within two different teams:

Building Services

Mott MacDonald in three words
Ready for a career within Mott MacDonald?

In our Building Services team, you’ll help design the systems that make buildings safe, comfortable, efficient and sustainable.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and other specialists on projects across a range of sectors, gaining experience throughout different stages of the design and delivery process. Our Building Services engineers work across both electrical and mechanical disciplines, including power, lighting and fire detection, as well as heating, ventilation, air conditioning and water services.

What you'll be doing:

  • Support the design of building services systems on a variety of projects.
  • Assist with engineering calculations, drawings, models and technical documentation.
  • Use digital design and BIM tools to help develop coordinated engineering solutions.
  • Work with engineers, architects and other technical disciplines.
  • Take part in project meetings, site visits, surveys and inspections.
  • Develop your understanding of sustainable and energy-efficient building design.

You'll be supported as you progressively build your technical knowledge and confidence, giving you a strong foundation for a career in Building Services Engineering.

Rail Systems - Electrification & Power

In our Rail Systems Electrification & Power team, you'll apply your electrical and building services engineering knowledge to the railway environment.

You'll work alongside engineers helping to develop the electrical infrastructure needed to support safe, reliable and efficient rail networks. This provides a different application of the skills you'll develop through your degree, giving you exposure to complex transport infrastructure and multidisciplinary engineering.

What you'll be doing:

  • Support the design of electrical power and electrification systems for railway projects.
  • Assist with engineering calculations, drawings, models and technical documentation.
  • Develop your understanding of how electrical systems support safe and reliable railway operations.
  • Use digital engineering tools to support the development and coordination of designs.
  • Work alongside rail, civil, structural and other engineering disciplines.
  • Develop your understanding of safety, sustainability and technical standards within the rail industry.

You'll gain experience on real transport projects while developing the technical knowledge required for a career in electrical engineering within the rail sector.

Eligibility

If you are successful and are offered an apprenticeship with us, you will enrol onto the Building Services Design Engineering BEng at either London South Bank University, or Liverpool John Moore University – depending on your base location. You will join either our Building Services team in Cambridge, Croydon or London, or our Rail Systems team in Manchester.

Their eligibility are as follows:

  • LSBU: A Level BBC - Must include Mathematics and preferably a Science in either Chemistry or Physics (UCAS points: 112)
  • Liverpool John Moores: Minimum Two A2 levels, Inc. Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Biology (112 UCAS points)

Are you ready to start your career journey with purpose, passion, and possibility? Our apprenticeships offer more than just a job - they’re an opportunity to shape your future.

As a paid degree apprentice, you’ll gain hands-on experience working on real projects while studying towards your degree. You’ll develop your technical and professional skills alongside experienced engineers, applying what you learn through your studies directly in the workplace.

Building services engineering is about designing the systems that allow buildings and infrastructure to function safely, efficiently and sustainably. From electrical power and lighting to heating, ventilation and other essential systems, building services engineers help create environments and infrastructure that work for the people who use them.

Standard entry requirements

Typical entry includes Level 3 qualifications (e.g. A Levels). You need to have resided in England for at least three years. We can not offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity.

Start your career with a global, employee-owned consultancy where your work can make a real difference. At Mott MacDonald, you'll work alongside experts, contribute to meaningful projects, and have the support, learning opportunities, and experience needed to grow your career from day one.

As a paid apprentice, you’ll gain hands-on experience working on real-world projects that make a difference. Alongside your role, you’ll complete classroom-based learning - either in person or virtually - with a reputable college, university, or training provider. Upon completion, you’ll earn a nationally recognised qualification that leads onto to exciting career opportunities.

Our degree apprenticeships typically last around five years, depending on the course, and are designed to help you grow both professionally and personally. You’ll be part of a team that’s shaping tomorrow’s world - whether that’s through innovation, sustainability, or community impact.

What we're looking for

In addition to the eligibility above, we're looking for people who:

  • Have a genuine interest in engineering and how things work.
  • Enjoy maths, science and solving technical problems.
  • Are interested in electrical systems, sustainable design and emerging technology.
  • Are curious, motivated and keen to learn.
  • Have good attention to detail and a logical approach to problem solving.
  • Enjoy working collaboratively and communicating with others.
  • Are comfortable using digital technology and keen to develop new technical skills.
  • Are committed to balancing academic study with workplace learning.

Your Development

Whichever team you join, you'll combine academic study with practical experience, allowing you to apply what you learn at university to real engineering challenges. You'll receive support from experienced engineers and mentors while gradually taking on more responsibility as your knowledge, skills and confidence develop.

Our degree apprenticeships typically run for around five years, depending on the programme. Your previous degree apprenticeship material uses the same approximate duration. Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll also develop valuable professional skills including communication, teamwork, problem solving, digital capability and project delivery.

UK Immigration

Mott MacDonald Ltd. are not currently offering sponsorship to candidates under the Skilled Worker visa route in the UK. This decision is as a consequence of the changes made to the Skilled Worker route by the UK Government in April 2024.

Our ethos is to develop, train and retain our apprentices and therefore we are looking for a long-term relationship with our apprentices. For this reason, we cannot accept applications from candidates who would be working under the Graduate visa route or other time-limited visas, (irrespective of visa duration), due to their temporary nature and the requirement for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route in future.

We continue to welcome applications from candidates who are eligible for alternative immigration routes in the UK, that do not require sponsorship as a Skilled Worker now or in future.

Application Process

  • Application form
  • Online strengths-based assessment

CVs and cover letters are not required as part of the application process. Candidates will be assessed through a single-stage strengths-based interview.

These opportunities are for our offices in England and Wales.

In your application form, you will be asked to select your preferred discipline, sector, and location.
