Our Sectors

Working across a diverse range of sectors, we provide innovative manufacturing solutions for organisations large and small and often transfer knowledge gained from one sector to another.

Energy & Utilities

Over 177,000 people in the UK are directly employed in this ever-changing sector (ONS, 2020), with low carbon and renewable energies seeing the biggest recent growth as the country strives to reach Net Zero. We can help with a wide range of challenges – from decommissioning in the oil and gas sectors to delivering new and advanced nuclear power, enhancing offshore wind power or developing low carbon hydrogen fuel cells. Our team contains experts in electrification, hydrogen, nuclear, wind, solar and tidal energy.

Defence

The global security landscape never stands still. So there’s an ever-evolving need to continually build and refine a modern defence supply chain that can outpace adversaries and retain an adaptive edge in protecting the UK’s long-term national security. As the UK defence industry’s Manufacturing Centre of Expertise, we work closely with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), collaborating with defence manufacturers and SMEs, to provide the innovation and inspiration that helps the UK to break new ground in the development of flexible supply chains, future skills and workforce strategy. The resulting ambition is to enable the fastest response to new and emerging threats, whilst retaining resilience and readiness in an increasingly unstable and challenging environment.

Construction

Uniquely positioned to support both Government and Industry, MTC is a driving force behind the adoption of manufacturing approaches and technologies within construction, enabling companies of all sizes to develop and deliver tried and tested solutions. Collaboration is at the heart of the MTC. By joining forces with various partners across multiple sectors, we deliver innovative solutions to address pressing societal challenges. We undertake diverse projects across different areas, including digital manufacturing and construction, leveraging advanced technologies like additive manufacturing and laser-based manufacturing plus many more to enhance productivity, quality, and sustainability.

Aerospace

As aerospace engineering experts, MTC is at the forefront of advanced manufacturing, supporting aerospace and space companies in propulsion systems, fuel and thermal management, and electrical systems. We work with organisations of all sizes - from OEMs to SMEs - on projects funded by industry, the Aerospace Technology Institute, the European Space Agency, and Innovate UK. MTC works with leading aerospace organisations to solve complex engineering challenges, accelerate innovation, and drive sustainable growth. Our collaborative projects span propulsion, lightweighting, digital manufacturing, and supply chain transformation - delivering measurable results across the sector.

Automotive

At MTC, we help automotive companies overcome their most pressing challenges by integrating technology, manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial readiness to fast-track automotive innovations from idea to reality. Our national assets are leveraged for product development, advanced manufacturing, and testing - utilising our experts, training programmes, and innovation projects. From initial engagement to full-scale deployment, we guide businesses through a structured, transparent process designed to deliver impact at every stage. Our goal is to help innovate faster, reduce risk, and build long-term capability in the automotive sector.

Hydrogen

The transition to clean energy and green technology is vital in delivering the UK’s ambitious commitment to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. As part of this pioneering journey, hydrogen could hold a critical answer to the decarbonisation of hard to abate sectors such as heavy industry, transport power generation, and elements of heat. Together with our industry partners, we’re working together to unlock the untold potential of this future energy source. As part of the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative, MTC is at the heart of a mission to accelerate critical technologies and supply chains in the UK, ensuring the future impact of the global hydrogen economy is liberated and unleashed through its surrounding network and infrastructure – never limited by it.

Nuclear Power

MTC has a strong pedigree in supporting the nuclear industry, both in civil and related sectors. With over 50 years of collective experience, our team understands the complex needs of the nuclear domain. We support the entire lifecycle of nuclear programmes - from concept creation, design and validation to maintenance, obsolescence management, decommissioning, and waste management. We work on programmes spanning both fission and fusion, whilst leveraging our skills and knowledge in other safety-critical sectors.

Renewables

As an industry leader, we help manufacturers adapt to evolving market demands. Our extensive experience across a range of industry sectors equips us to navigate the challenges and pressures business face, ensuring they stay competitive ready for what’s to come. We’re passionate about improving productivity, reducing costs, embedding innovative new technologies and de-risking the use of new technologies. MTC offers end-to-end capabilities that support the principles and processes of circularity and sustainability, utilising our knowledge of sustainability road mapping, equipment data monitoring and sustainability supply chain readiness assessment. With industry-leading capabilities, cutting-edge facilities, teams of engineers and expertise in collaborative R&D projects, MTC is where a broad range of multinationals, OEMs and SMEs choose to develop and prove processes and technologies in a low-risk environment.

Roads

MTC accelerates solutions for the road and infrastructure sector, proving innovative approaches to bridge inspections, sustainable manufacturing, and advanced technologies that enhance safety, efficiency, and long-term resilience.
