Where you'll be working

SP Energy Networks keeps the electricity flowing to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire. The energy landscape is changing rapidly as the way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy evolves. Our role is to decarbonise our network through technology and innovation and to facilitate the UK's journey to Net Zero through electrification. 

What you'll be doing

You'll get involved in a wide range of Civil Engineering activities which may include Asset Management, Project Development and/or Delivery, Engineering Standards, Detailed Civil Design activities (including geotechnical, earthworks, drainage, buildings, steel structures and concrete foundations), managing designs carried out by Design Houses and EPC Contractors and Construction Management for either the Distribution and Transmission business. 

Throughout your programme, you will gain exposure to a wide range of network investment projects, spanning from low voltage (LV) to extra high voltage (EHV). These can include customer connections, substation upgrades and Strategic Projects, and central core business functions. 

You can expect to gain exposure to a range of activities, which may include: 

• Civil Surveying: Supporting surveys and assessments of civil assets, such as structures, drainage systems, foundations, buildings, bridges, and tunnels. This will involve collecting data, evaluating measurements, and assessing the condition and performance of these assets. 
• Conceptual Design: Contribute to the early stages of project development by assisting in the evolution of conceptual designs for infrastructure projects. This will involve considering factors such as functionality, feasibility, and sustainability. 
• Detailed Civil and Structural Design: Involvement in the detailed design phase of projects where you will use your technical knowledge and skills to create precise and accurate designs for civil and structural elements. This includes creating drawings, specifying materials, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and regulations. You may also be responsible for the review of designs carried out by third parties such as Design Houses and EPC Contractors.
• Civil Drawing: Creating and maintain detailed drawings and plans for civil engineering projects. This includes using computer-aided design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to produce accurate and comprehensive drawings. 
• Civil Policy and Investment Strategy: Contributing to the development of civil policies and investment strategies within the SP Energy Networks business. This involves evaluating data, reviewing industry trends, and working with stakeholders to develop strategies that optimise asset management, construction, and maintenance processes. 
• Site Engineering Duties: The opportunity to work on-site, supporting construction projects and ensuring that designs are implemented accurately and safely. This may involve coordinating with contractors, conducting inspections, and resolving any technical issues that arise during the construction process. 
• Project Management: Coordinating resources, managing budgets, and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within scope.

You'll need: 

• An Honours Degree at a minimum of 2:2 (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering or similar 
• A valid UK Driving licence (or working towards obtaining one) 
• Strong communication skills to work effectively across teams 
• A genuine interest in sustainable infrastructure and the energy sector 
• Familiarity with design and technical drawing software is beneficial
