Oliver Crudge

Product Engineer, Direct Entry

"I really enjoy the variety of technical enquiries and projects that we receive, each one is different and presents a different challenge."

Role & Responsibilities

As a product engineer I work on a wide range of projects and technical enquiries outside the scope of our standard product range. This involves project management, technical design work including producing engineering drawings, finite element analysis, developing test equipment and regimes as well as technical report writing. As part of the key industries team we work on projects to supply seals for a wide range of applications, from nuclear waste containment units, large diameter wind turbine bearings, rotary seals for super yachts, ice breaker ships and many more.

Most Enjoyable Part of Your Job

I really enjoy the variety of technical enquiries and projects that we receive, each one is different and presents a different challenge. Each project presents the chance to learn something new about the unique application and requires research into new technology and techniques to overcome the problem. In a single week I can research new technology, carry out technical design work using CAD and FEA software in the office, work on prototypes on the shop floor, work in the test room or visit a customer.

What do you enjoy outside of work

I’m a very keen mountain biker, road cyclist and fell runner, living and working on the border of the Lake District National Park in Cockermouth is perfect for this. Although the lake district has temperamental weather, the right attitude, a selection of coats and a good head torch make it possible to get out in the hills at least a few evenings in the week. Weekends often involve bigger adventures in the Lake District or Scotland. I have lived in some big cities and still visit friends there often but much prefer the balance of living in the place where I used to go on holiday.
