A little background on our Geotechnical team:

You will be part of the Geotechnical Team, which sits within the Maritime UK Advisory Group and is located across our UK offices. The team works with all Haskoning business lines, with a particular focus on the Maritime sector.

Our maritime and geotechnical specialists work on international projects to help create successful ports and maritime infrastructure worldwide. The team provides technical input across desk studies, ground investigation, geological interpretation, geotechnical analysis and design, and the preparation of reports, drawings and presentations.

The Role:

We are seeking a summer placement student, currently studying geology, engineering geology, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering or a related degree at university. The role can be based in our London, Peterborough, Liverpool or Newcastle office, working with the geotechnical team for a period of 6 weeks over July/August/September.

The role will require you to use your technical training to contribute to the development of geological and geotechnical inputs for live consultancy projects. You will work with engineers and geologists in the team, with typical tasks including:

  • Assisting with geotechnical desk studies, including the review and interpretation of published geological, environmental and ground investigation information.
  • Supporting the development of geological ground models and helping to interpret ground conditions for engineering projects.
  • Assisting with the preparation of ground investigation information, data schedules and factual or interpretative reporting.
  • Helping to analyse and present geological and geotechnical data using appropriate software, spreadsheets, drawings, GIS or 2D/3D visual outputs.
  • Assisting in preparing reports, drawings, presentations and technical notes for internal teams and clients.
  • Gaining knowledge of how geotechnical projects are planned, delivered and managed commercially and technically within a consultancy environment.
  • Working with colleagues from other disciplines and offices, particularly on maritime and civil engineering projects.

What we feel are the required skills and experience:

  • Analytical Ability - willingness to undertake technical review, data interpretation and basic analysis work with support from the team, with a proactive approach.
  • Communication Skills - can articulate orally and in writing the reasons behind your decisions, participate in team discussions and share ideas.
  • Problem Solving - can think laterally and develop solutions to problems with others and on your own.
  • Relationship Building - builds a network within the immediate team over the duration of the summer placement.
  • Organised and Structured - able to work in a disciplined and consistent way, with clear storage and presentation of project information and data.
  • Personable - approachable, relatable and empathetic.
  • Currently completing a Geology, Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or closely related degree, with an interest in ground engineering, ground investigation, maritime infrastructure or civil engineering.
