Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee/Graduate Engineering Geologist to join our Ground Investigation team based in Swindon. Our team provides specialist geological, geotechnical, geo-environmental and ground investigation services across a diverse range of infrastructure, environmental and development projects throughout the UK and internationally.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your technical and professional skills while working alongside experienced geologists, geotechnical engineers and environmental specialists on a wide variety of projects.

As a Trainee/Graduate Engineering Geologist, you will support both site-based and office-based activities, contributing to the planning, supervision, interpretation and reporting of ground investigations.

You will:

  • Assist with the planning and delivery of ground investigation projects.
  • Undertake geological logging of soil and rock samples in accordance with industry standards.
  • Support the supervision of drilling, trial pitting and other site investigation activities.
  • Collect, manage and interpret geological, geotechnical and environmental data.
  • Assist in the preparation of factual and interpretative ground investigation reports.
  • Support health, safety and quality assurance procedures across project activities.
  • Perform site inspections and monitoring activities.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality project outcomes.
  • Assist with risk assessments, method statements and project documentation.
  • Have willingness to work away from home, including night/weekend working, and in all weathers to support project requirements.
  • Develop technical knowledge and contribute to innovative solutions for complex ground engineering challenges.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Sciences, Geoscience or a related discipline.
  • Good understanding of geological principles, soil and rock classification, and ground conditions.
  • Knowledge of ground investigation techniques and geological logging.
  • Motivated to achieve targets and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Conscientious, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Keen to develop technical knowledge and expand learning beyond the normal working environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexible and willing to travel throughout the UK and, where required, overseas.
  • Enjoy problem-solving and applying scientific knowledge to real-world challenges.
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, technically proficient, with ambition and drive.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel are essential.
  • Familiarity with GIS, geotechnical or geological software packages is advantageous.
  • Good report writing and technical documentation skills.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements associated with site-based work.
  • Full UK driving licence (for manual vehicles).
  • Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the wider team.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while maintaining initiative and focus.
