I joined AECOM in May 2021, and I'm now approaching my third year with the company. In this time, I've helped to manage a diverse portfolio of defence projects, ranging from master planning to detailed design and construction. Recently, I successfully led my first project, delivering Net Zero Carbon strategies for two Ministry of Defence (MOD) sites.

Thinking about the projects you are involved in – what impact have you had to improve social outcomes for communities?

In Catterick Garrison, Richmondshire, our team is providing project management, cost management, and design assurance services for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) who, alongside the NHS, are constructing the Catterick Integrated Care Campus (CICC). This healthcare facility is designed to serve both Armed Forces personnel and the broader community.

The project aims to improve social outcomes by providing comprehensive healthcare services under one roof. By enhancing access to healthcare and social services, the CICC seeks to promote social cohesion, improve health and well-being, and ensure that vital support is accessible to all.

Throughout the project, my role has involved arranging and supporting engagement with end users within the client organisations to optimise the design. This ensures a bespoke solution tailored to the needs of the local communities.

By contributing to the development of the Catterick Integrated Care Campus, our team is making a tangible impact on improving social outcomes for communities.

How has your work at AECOM contributed towards having a positive impact on the environment?

My involvement in a coastal remediation project at Dalgety Bay, Fife, was a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on the environment. The project addressed radium contamination, thereby enhancing the environment, community safety and overall well-being.

AECOM provided multi-disciplinary design and support services, with our team taking a leadership role in the project. As part of the team, I supported the project manager and design team in managing the contractor throughout the construction phase. One of our primary aims was to ensure that the delivery aligned with the quality requirements of the scope.

We collaborated closely with the contractor and regulatory agencies, such as SEPA, to fine-tune construction methodologies and optimise the remediation process. This approach not only ensured the effectiveness of the remediation efforts but also minimised environmental impact.

Additionally, I played a crucial role in resolving construction queries from the contractor, thereby supporting smooth project execution. Our innovative solutions and successful delivery demonstrate AECOM's commitment to improving the environment and enhancing community welfare. Through projects like the coastal remediation at Dalgety Bay, AECOM continues to make meaningful contributions to environmental sustainability and community well-being.

Do you have any interesting experience around collaboration, multi-disciplinary work, and thinking and acting globally at AECOM?

In my role as an Assistant Project Manager at AECOM, I've had the privilege of engaging in collaborative, multi-disciplinary work, particularly in supporting the delivery of master planning for the MOD. This involved closely collaborating with our diverse teams of experts to provide strategic planning for both the UK and Overseas MOD Estate.

Leading the collaboration between architects, engineers, building surveyors, environmental consultants, and other professionals was pivotal. Together, we conducted site visits, surveys, and engaged with end-users to identify opportunities for site improvement. Additionally, I facilitated presentations to panels of stakeholders to review design options and played a key role in producing final deliverables, including detailed reports, project drawings and overall masterplans.

This multi-disciplinary approach not only fostered a comprehensive understanding of site requirements but also ensured the development of innovative solutions to address complex challenges.

Furthermore, this experience demonstrated AECOM's commitment to global excellence by integrating diverse perspectives and expertise to deliver impactful solutions both in the UK and Overseas. Engaging in multi-disciplinary collaboration not only contributed to my professional growth but also emphasised the importance of thinking and acting globally in my work at AECOM.

Are there any other interesting or unique opportunities you have had through your work at AECOM? Or interesting experiences with clients or building client relationships?

These experiences have been important in my personal and professional growth, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and presenting unique challenges specific to each location.

Working abroad has exposed me to a variety of different environments with unique requirements and constraints. Collaborating with colleagues and clients in such environments has significantly enhanced my communication skills, allowing me to effectively convey ideas, brainstorm solutions, and build strong relationships.

Living and working in foreign countries has been a transformative experience, requiring me to adapt to new environments, overcome obstacles, and manage unfamiliar situations. This journey has instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and a capacity to thrive outside my comfort zone.
