1) How did you enter the profession?

My interest in the patent attorney profession began when I was introduced to the profession at a university alumni talk. Initially, the prospect of working at the forefront of scientific and technological developments sounded appealing to me. Upon further research, I discovered that the profession aligned with what I wanted out of a career and more: being able to apply a large proportion of the technical knowledge I’d gained throughout my studies, by assisting clients with inventions within a variety of technical fields; the inevitability of constantly learning and building upon my technical knowledge; and being able to follow a structured career pathway. The legal and commercial aspects of the role also intrigued me and further pointed me towards the profession. A work placement at a patent attorney firm confirmed my interest in the profession and in my final year at university I applied for a trainee position at R&G. After the interview process, I thankfully received an offer that I was delighted to accept!

2) What are your main roles and responsibilities?

My main responsibilities as a trainee at R&G currently include:

  • Preparing responses to office actions.
  • Reporting office actions to clients.
  • Drafting patent applications.
  • Assisting qualified attorneys in preparing notices of opposition, as well as in conducting validity assessments.

3) What drew you to R&G?

One of the things that drew me to the firm was R&G’s great reputation for training. R&G have a bespoke training programme which begins with a two-week boot camp that introduces you to the fundamentals of IP law. Training continues through a series of training sessions that occur every Monday. These are extremely useful, as each session introduces you to a key area within patent law, preparing you for your day-to-day work and for future exams.

I was also drawn by the fact that R&G work with a wide range of clients within the engineering, materials and consumer products (EMCP) practice group. I knew that being a part of this practice group would allow me to work with these clients, exposing me to many different technologies and all aspects of the profession.

Also, during the interview process I got the sense that R&G have a friendly and social environment. Upon joining the firm, this has proven itself to be true – everyone has been welcoming and supportive and there are plenty of social events to attend.

4) How has life at the firm been so far?

I have been receiving a variety of work from a range of qualified attorneys at the firm, so I certainly feel as though I am learning and developing well. Also, I have recently been attending more client calls, both with existing clients and with potential new clients, which has been insightful.

Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying my time at R&G. Although I am still in the early stages of my journey, I already feel well integrated and whenever I need support with anything, there is always someone there to offer it. I look forward to progressing my career at R&G.
