BRE’s Sustainable Energy Team provides government, commercial organisations and individuals with technical support on a variety of areas related to the energy performance of buildings. From developing National Calculation Methodologies and tools such as SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) and SBEM (Simplified Building Energy Model), to undertaking complex dynamic simulations in support of research and consultancy projects, we are involved in a wide range of projects including the creation of new applications and products such as the Excess Cold Calculator, collecting/analysing/building new data repositories in order to inform applied research in the built environment and developing new ideas and products …and much more.

These are all fast-growing business areas and we are looking for creative, inter-disciplinary analytical thinkers with an ability and drive for problem solving, who are eager to learn and develop new skills. This role will involve researching and developing methodologies and tools, data analysis and peer checking methods and tools developed by others. The successful candidate will have a degree in a related area such as Engineering, Physics or Mathematics and an understanding of the factors affecting energy use in buildings. This will enable them to actively contribute to all stages and types of building energy modelling projects, from concept and design, through methodology development to implementation, testing, model use and consultancy.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design and creation of modular systems/methodologies considering integration and interoperability.
  • Direct engagement with clients to identify needs and develop specifications of project requirements.
  • Working with senior developers on the implementation of methodologies into software applications.
  • Analysing and interpreting evidence from field trials, laboratory experiments and other sources to develop improved methods for estimating energy performance.
  • Supporting the day-to-day technical aspects of multiple projects.
  • Managing work packages within projects and preparing deliverables.


  • Creative, analytical thinking skills.
  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics, or a related subject.
  • Knowledge of energy performance and/or building services.
  • Experience of spreadsheet analysis.
  • Experience of data analysis and manipulation.
  • Excellent planning and time management skills.


  • Masters level Engineering, Mathematics or Physics degree.
  • Experience of programming and databases.

Person Specification

  • Adept at problem solving and working with novel ideas.
  • Strong willingness to expand current knowledge and further develop skills in programming / data analysis / dynamic modelling.
  • Articulate and able to express complex ideas and problems clearly in written and spoken form individually or to groups.
  • Confident in liaising with a variety of stakeholders and with good presentation skills.
  • Customer and delivery focussed.
  • Attention to detail that ensures accuracy, consistency and quality.
