Ciara McAuley

CIVILS Section Engineer

How long have you been working at GRAHAM and what projects have you worked on?

"I have been working with GRAHAM for three years now, since graduation. I did my placement year working on the A6 Castledawson to Randalstown joint venture scheme and I’m now working on the M2 junction 5 Improvements Scheme in Kent."

How did you get into civil engineering?

“As someone with a background in farming, I’ve always preferred work that requires a hands-on approach and being outside. I really enjoyed my work experience week on the A6 Scheme, analysing construction drawings and interacting with various team members.

My eldest brother became a Chartered Civil Engineer and I was fascinated by the work that he did and how the design drawings came to life.”

What does a typical day look like?

“No two days are the same, my role involves organising labour, plant and materials. Using a GPS and total station for setting out road markups, drainage and structures. Keeping quality records, diaries and timesheets to ensure health & safety is at the forefront every day.

Communication is a key skill, as a large part of my role involves communicating with subcontractors, designers, colleagues and clients.”

What are the most valuable skills you’ve learned during your time at GRAHAM?

“Thinking and acting under pressure on a regular basis is a very valuable skill as the site environment is so diverse and variable.”

What advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a career in civil engineering?

“Be prepared for every day to be different and be good at adapting to a constantly changing environment. There won’t be a boring day!”.
