Finance Summer Internship

What made you apply to Centrica?

"After seeing Centrica and its typical strong performance results, I chose to apply to a progressive company which looks towards the future and one which I knew would value my contribution as an employee rather than simply an intern. I was keen to work in the energy industry as it is never ceases to evolve; every day there are new legislative, political, or even personal challenges to overcome."

What was the application process like?

"Very transparent with consistent communication throughout. I did not feel uncertain or anxious during any part of the process as my recruitment manager gave me periodic updates. The dates of each stage of the process and, more importantly, the dates that I would receive feedback were clearly outlined."

What did you enjoy the most about your internship?

"Despite being closely supported by my manager and my team, I thoroughly enjoyed being thrown into the deep end into different projects which they felt that I could make an impact on. I was valued as an employee and a colleague rather than simply the intern and felt that my contributions were worthwhile. Aside from my own work, I have had the pleasure of attending various meetings with many of the senior leadership team; having the opportunity to meet and present to them has been an insightful experience which is difficult to find elsewhere."

What did you learn from your experience in the internship?

"This programme, and the work that has been requested of me has required me to develop extremely strong time management skills. The ability to juggle various projects and deadlines and then communicate my progress or challenges is essential.

I have also gained a further insight into the energy industry as a whole, not only from my team, but from the various presentations that have been given to us and even from meeting the CEO. As this is an industry I am passionate about, I believe this has helped me develop even more of an interest in the future of it.

However, most importantly, is the need for teamwork and whilst I initially believed my teamwork skills to be strong from my extracurricular activities, nothing can prepare you for the real working world where the most successful teams rely on each other for progress. Developing this skill has also provided some of the most enjoyment out of this programme, therefore I cannot recommend it enough."

What advice would you give to somebody thinking of applying for the internship?

"If you have an interest in the energy industry and want a company where hierarchical lines are blurred- apply. I have had regular exposure to senior members of teams who listen to my perspective equally as closely as other team members; a rare but welcome addition to any company."
