Medicinal Chemist

What makes you, you?

I’m passionate about helping others. As a volunteer, I spent 10 days with children who have serious illnesses – and returned to my research even more determined to improve young lives.

What’s the best thing about working here?

It’s having the respect from the renowned scientists who I work with. We work in collaborative teams: my ideas count and are often implemented.

What are your highlights?

I have a MChem degree from Bristol University. In my 10 years here, I‘ve been promoted three times and been involved in two compounds that have progressed to clinical trials. Recently, I was recognised as one of two “most meritorious runners-up” for the European Federation of Medicinal Chemistry “Young Chemist in Industry Award”. I’m still very excited about my job and the prospect that one of the respiratory drugs I’m developing will make it to market and help people’s lives.

How have we supported your development?

Soon after joining, I was managing others. I have lots of freedom to take ownership of my projects, but I work with many distinguished scientists who are always approachable for advice and support. I’m now in my third year of a GSK-University of Strathclyde collaborative PhD scheme. It’s a brilliant way to take further qualifications and gain access to leading academics.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining us?

Career progression here is directly related to your contribution, rather than just qualifications. You get out what you put in.
