Hi! We are MathSoc, the Mathematics society for the University of Birmingham! We are a social society that loves to get everyone involved, whether that's through baking, fundraising or even running.
We currently have our own Football and Netball team competing in the University’s Campus League. Each year we decide on a charity of the year and for 2021/22 we are fundraising for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.
These live Gradcracker employers have shown they are particularly interested in members of our Society. You can click on their logos to visit their Company Hubs, ‘Follow’ them and apply!
If you're an employer and would like to add your company logo to this page, please contact Georgia via email at georgia@gradcracker.com
At the beginning of each year MathSoc invites first years to get involved in a family scheme.
First years that sign up get allocated to a family, consisting of other first years and ‘parents’ that are students already studying Maths at Birmingham.
Our aim is to provide a support network for new students and an environment to get to know fellow students.
This year has so far featured our annual Pizza Quiz, Bowling and many families also meeting up in their own time to hang out and socialise.
This year we partnered up with Imperial College London’s Maths Society to help host and organise the first round of the ICMC.
This involved University of Birmingham students being given the opportunity to undertake a gruelling three hour paper consisting of topics such as calculus and analysis, algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory.
Some of our members are currently undergoing training to take part in a tutoring scheme with Dame Elizabeth Cadbury School, a local co educational secondary school and sixth form.
MathSoc has taken advantage of being able to go out and socialise more by arranging multiple social events throughout the year.
These included in our first Semester, a bar crawl in Birmingham with circa 200 members attending, as well as a visit to Ghetto Golf, a crazy golf venue in the city centre and our Christmas Party where we gave out many prizes for raffles and best dressed awards.
We offer our members the opportunity to participate in regular sports for free.
These are our mixed Football and Netball teams allowing anyone with any sort of sporting background to come and play for fun and also choose to enjoy a relaxed competitive environment in the Campus League matches that the University offers, pitching societies against each other. These have been very successful in attracting lots of members in Semester 1 and we hope to grow them further in the upcoming months.
We have lots of upcoming events this Semester, including another install of our Charity Bake Off for the Children’s Hospital Charity.
This time we aim to host the event in person and offer a bake sale after the competition where all proceeds will go towards the Charity. Additionally, we plan to take part in another Running Festival this year and in doing so raise money for the Children’s Hospital Charity.
Finally, our annual MathSoc Spring Ball in March will offer members and non-members alike an opportunity to enjoy an evening of food, dancing, celebration and much more!
