We are the University of Edinburgh Civil Engineering Society. We represent all of the students studying any subjects that fall under the area of civil engineering. We are a committee of students across all years at the university, dedicated to promoting civils and providing opportunities to our 200+ members.
Throughout the academic year, we work hard to organise a range of events such as site visits, technical talks and networking events. We also host social events for our members to relax and get away from their studies for a little while; such as coffee mornings and pub quizzes. We also run a very popular annual CivSoc Ball - attended by students and academic staff alike!
Our goal as a society is to look after the interests and wellbeing of all who study civils at the university, building a supportive and friendly engineering community at the university which supports and elevates the academic lives and future careers of our members.
We have strong links to the ICE and IStructE through their Early Careers Networks and Regional Groups, ensuring that our members are well-informed about career paths and chartership, as well as having the opportunity to connect with a larger network outside the university.
We also link to the Industrial Advisory Board at the University, feeding back to academic staff and industry leaders on how to ensure that our members have all the skills needed to succeed in industry. Additionally, through industrial sponsorship, we are able to provide summer placement and graduate opportunities.
Our society is free to join, as are the vast majority of our events, so come along and see what CivSoc can do for you!
We also sell merch!
As our society covers all areas of civil engineering, we have a huge range in the degrees that our members study. See below for all of the degrees our society covers. You do not have to be a civil engineering student to join, we welcome members from all degrees, but make sure you are willing to talk about concrete!
Every September, we have stalls in both the Bristo Square and Kings Building Campus Activities Fairs. We love to chat to prospective students or freshers about civil engineering and of course give out CivSoc stickers and sweeties!
Every year we host a civils themes pub quiz, attended by both students and academic staff. It’s one of the highlights of the CivSoc calendar.
We host coffee mornings in the EngInn Café on campus at regular points in the semester, to give our members a break from the stresses of uni, and get some free coffee and pastries.
We select a charity linked with civil engineering/construction to support each year.
This year we chose Mates in Mind to focus on the topic of mental health in civil engineering, which aligned with the introduction of our new Wellbeing Officer role on the committee.
We visited the newest development on our own engineering campus, built by McLaughlin and Harvey.
When we visited, the structure was still in its early stages, so we were able to see the results of sheet pile installation, and the initial groundwork on site to prepare for the steel structure.
As the new development is on campus, we were able to then see the progression of the structure on our way to lectures!
During the second semester we had another great talk from design consultancy ARUP on the topic of retrofit in engineering design.
Catherine Rankine, a Chartered Structural Engineer, spoke about the case study of 1 Triton Square, and how this project related to and reflected progressions in sustainable design.
Last year, we visited the Springside development in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh. The site was a high rise, post-tensioned concrete structure, and we were able to speak to the design engineers and contractors on site about the design methodology and how it translates to the buildability on site, especially related to the confined nature of the site.
We had a fantastic talk from one of our sponsors, Goodson Associates early in the semester. This related directly to a project our members complete as part of the fourth year of their degree, on Passivhaus principles in engineering design.
There are lots of different ways to get in contact with us!
