Leicester Actuarial Science Society

Founded in 2015, Leicester Actuarial Science Society (LASS) is a student-run actuarial science society at the University of Leicester. The society's aim is to give its members a well-rounded experience of the actuarial profession and the wider opportunities within it.

At LASS, we organise several events throughout the year, inviting alumni and guest speakers from different professional backgrounds, including data science, pensions, and applied mathematics.

The facts
We are a vibrant community of students and professionals, with a shared passion for actuarial science and other related disciplines.
LASS is the only regional actuarial society of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, UK (IFoA) within the East Midlands.
Every year we host a Worship Company of Actuaries (WCA) lecture, during which we present prizes to the best performing second- and third-year Mathematics and Actuarial Science students.
At the moment we are working closely with the Mathematics Society at Leicester (SUMS) to increase student participation at our events and to give our members a well-rounded experience.

Alumni Sessions

We had a great alumni session, highlighting former students currently working for the Phoenix Group (Dylan Patel), Direct Line (Nina Ndu), and LV (Can Baysal). They spoke about their experiences working in the insurance industry and the challenges they faced when they started out.

Following on from that, there was an informal chat session for students to ask them questions around employability skills and getting industry-ready. It was definitely worth attending!

Talks

Aidan Smith, Chief Actuary of GAD’s Insurance and Investment business, gave a wonderful talk on visualising data, which included several interesting examples of the application of data visualisation, as well as a few tips on how to approach different data visualisation problems from the standpoint of formulating a suitable approach, writing a commentary/rationale, and implementing the approach.

Quiz afternoon

Two socials, including a quiz afternoon, presented a great opportunity for both members and non-members to get to know each other and find out more about LASS.

The quiz afternoon (image on the right) was the first social organised by our society, and we had many students signing up for LASS following the event.
