The University of Leeds Chemical Engineering Society (ChemEngSoc) is a student-led society that hosts events aiming to encourage professional and academic development within the broad field of chemical engineering. Further to this, we host socials which aim to bring together our students to foster a close-knit community of students with a keen interest in the industry.
Some of our staple professional development events include talks hosted from professional and academic partners; a unique industry mentoring scheme providing our students with the opportunity to network with professional engineers from before their academic or professional career even begins, and site visits to local industrial points of interest.
This year we are excited to be running our mentoring scheme again. We have recruited over 20 professional engineers to mentor 30 students on a 1-1 or 2-1 basis. We aim to expand this scheme to include mentors from a greater variety of companies and sectors.
Providing students with regular, informal sessions with a professional engineer who has likely been through the experiences that students are/will be going through, this is a unique scheme which provides our students with a resource for professional development, careers and academic advice.
Having already hosted talks from both Atkins and the iChemE, we always look forward to providing a varied and interesting roster of speakers throughout the term, ranging in topic from how a nanotechnology startup is shaking up the industry to make it more sustainable, to careers advice from revered national institutions.
Every year we host the Chemical Engineering Ball, an opportunity at the end of the year for undergraduates, postgraduates and professors to celebrate the close of the year together.
With attendance of over 200 students and staff, it truly is a special celebration of all our achievements and collaboration throughout the year!
