The Graduate Development Programme is a three-year framework, designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to progress your early career and work towards a professional qualification. The programme features a series of signature events, core training modules, professional development, mentoring and on-the-job experience.
The purpose of the Graduate Forum is to unite the UK Graduate Community across our 5 businesses, ensuring every voice is heard and has the power to influence. Representatives from each business reach out to their respective communities, listening to the needs and desires of each graduate. The forum turns graduates’ ideas into reality and brings about not only positive change within the GDP but also across Atkins.
Good times are an essential part of the GDP. These include everything from pub crawls and meals out, to karting, bouldering or ice skating. Our grads also enjoy annual trips abroad, they’ve visited the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, gone surfing in Spain and skiing in France!
In years two and three there are events to reflect on your performance and network with your fellow graduate peers:
Year two event: A two-day workshop with a group of graduates from across the company. You’ll develop team-working, communication skills and learn about innovation and client engagement.
Year three event: A workshop which covers a range of topics to develop interpersonal skills, such as influencing, managing conflict and managing change. You will also consider your career aspirations and produce a personal development plan.
During your time on our graduate programme you may get the opportunity to complete a secondment or placement in a different part of Atkins. If you work in transportation or infrastructure this could be across to Bangalore in India as well as various secondments across the UK with other business areas. From learning new skills, to forging new relationships, to discovering a vibrant culture – overseas secondments are just some of the experiences that await you.
Each year our new UK graduates relish the challenge to raise money for RedR – the international disaster relief charity that Atkins patronises. It works to save and rebuild the lives of people throughout the world who are affected by natural and man-made disasters. Next year your aim will be to top last year’s impressive fundraising total of over £20,000.
Diversity, equality and inclusion are about more than just business results. They each play a part in creating a successful culture of innovation and collaboration and a fairer workplace for all. At Atkins you’ll join a place where our teams have created a strong working and learning environment. We want to be a truly inclusive employer and that means continuing to improve for the benefit of everyone. We value the diversity of people because we believe it’s the right thing to do. Some of our strong staff-generated groups include LGBT+, Women’s Professional Network, ENABLE Disability Network and BAME Network. We have also signed the Time to Change pledge as a commitment to change perceptions and have positive conversations around mental health.
As an employer of choice, we recognise that you exist outside of the office and that everyone has different interests and commitments. When you can excel in your personal life, you’ll bring that drive and passion to work. That’s why flexible working is a vital part of our collective success. You’ll be trusted to achieve your best at work, while structuring your time around what matters to you.
Whether it’s inspiring the next generation of engineers or getting involved with local communities, we know we’re in a position to help create a better future. That’s why everyone at Atkins has the opportunity to take part in 2 days of voluntary, charity or STEM-related work each year.
The GDP at Atkins is designed to support you into the world of work. In appreciation for being part of the team, we offer a range of holistic benefits which we call ‘Total Reward’. It combines financial rewards, flexible benefits, learning & development, and can be tailored to meet your changing career and personal needs as you progress with us. Find out more here.
