Nicola Ridgway

SHE Advisor

Early Careers Case Study

Following successful completion of the Kier foundation degree programme I qualified as an Environmental Advisor and have now progressed to working as a SHE Advisor. I have worked for Kier for 11 years on a range of projects throughout the north west of England.

Due to the varied nature of the role and projects there is rarely an average day; days vary from site visits, developing and delivering training, hosting inductions, meeting with regulators, helping with the Wildlife Trust to improve environmentally sensitive sites, face fit testing operatives, to attending plant and product manufactures to improve product knowledge and understanding.

The variety of the role is of huge personal appeal; SHE Advisors are offered the opportunity to be an integral part of the site team involved in every aspect of the project from design through to handover offering support and guidance including ensuring processes set against industry standards are adhered to.

SHE Advisors work with a range of disciplines both internal to Kier and external including third parties and regulators. Moments such as watching the fireworks with the site team upon project completion and then watching the Queen officially open the Mersey Gateway bridge are both personally and professionally rewarding.

Throughout my career with Kier I have received support from various levels of management at both divisional and group level. From the onset the foundation degree has guided me through the process of early development of construction and the built environment. This gained the opportunity to work on several major national contracts circa £500million plus to local divisional contracts circa half a million.

Kier has provided consistent training allowing for career progression including achieving industry recognised qualifications. I have been exposed to a range of experiences enhancing my competence leading to increased responsibility.

Working for Kier presents a vast range of opportunities allowing for the development of both your professional and personal life. Being a member of the SHE team allows you to have an integral role enabling you to instil the ethos that safe sites are productive sites, this in turn results in helping to play a major part of the development of Kier.
