Throughout the history of JN Bentley, much of our work has been associated with water and the water environment through work with water companies, local authorities, the Coal Authority and more recently, the Environment Agency.
We have wide experience of land drainage works for the Internal Drainage Boards and have constructed surface water storage systems and pumping stations. We have also applied sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) techniques to our projects in areas of hardstanding with our commercial clients.
JN Bentley has traditionally held a presence in the highways and local authority sectors – with our workload growing in the sector in recent times.
We have a large and dedicated workforce with experience in undertaking highway structures work and our team is familiar with the relevant Department for Transport Specifications for Highway Works. We are accustomed to working with local authorities in road renewal, bridge refurbishment contracts, pedestrianisation projects and city/town centre enhancement programmes.
Through this experience, we know how important it is to deliver projects with minimal disruption to members of the public. Where access through the site needs to be maintained, we understand the additional responsibility to protect members of the general public.
Our work in the energy sections comprises recent projects with Cadent Gas and National Grid, focusing on projects to improve their civil infrastructure.
We currently work with Cadent Gas who own and operate the largest gas distribution network in the UK, supplying 11 million homes and businesses across the North West and East of England, West Midlands and North London.
Having completed two large batches of gas valve remediation, in 2021 we were asked to carry out improvement works to cover and protect a vulnerable section of a high-pressure pipeline. We are also building a relationship with Magnox, the organisation responsible for the safe and secure clean-up of 12 nuclear sites owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

JN Bentley’s move into renewable energy, particularly the hydropower market, was a natural progression from the expertise gained over many years with our water sector clients and from other environmental projects.
Our team brings together the full expertise that we can offer in process, mechanical and electrical engineering and programme management, with support as required from the wider organisation.
JN Bentley is privileged to have worked with some prestigious hydropower clients such as Northumbrian Water, British Waterways and The Small Hydro Company, undertaking hydroturbine design, refurbishment and installations waste water screw generators, clean water generators and combined heat and power (CHP) systems.
JN Bentley has experience of working directly with schools and hospitals as well as through local authorities to deliver health and education projects, which we have done since the early 2000s.
We have worked closely with the likes of Leeds City Council and Bradford Metropolitan District Council on schools programmes and with Leeds NHS Trust on a range of health sector projects. We have managed both refurbishment and new build projects and pride ourselves on being able to deliver from design through to completion.
It’s testament to the quality of our workmanship and our flexible approach that we have secured a number of repeat contracts with many of our clients in this sector.
Traditionally, waste has been a key market for us. We have operated long-term framework agreements with clients including Waste Recycling Group and Yorwaste.
These frameworks have delivered feasibility, design and construction services principally for landfill operations, but we also have significant experience in the design and construction of household waste recycling centres and waste transfer stations. Our expertise has seen us deliver landfill engineering, leachate treatment, composting and liquid treatment projects.
A key ingredient of our success lies in our understanding of client requirements in respect of the regulatory framework that governs their operations – particularly the considerations of the Environment Agency.
