Our Projects

Below is a selection of some of our projects...

Thames Barrier

The Thames Barrier is one of the largest and most prestigious moveable flood defence structures in the world. Rendel (formerly Rendel Palmer & Tritton) designed and supervised the construction of this major project. The structure covers the entire width of the River Thames at Woolwich with four main openings of 61m to permit navigation and six subsidiary gated openings.

A novel feature of the project is the use of 19m high, 3,300 tonne rising sector gates in the navigational openings, which lie in recessed sills in the river bed when not in use and normally allow unobstructed passage of river traffic through the barrier.

Sydney Gateway, Australia

Rendel carried out proof engineer checks on the permanent works of all the complex bridges and the flyover. In addition, Rendel provided proof engineering services for the erection engineering and launching for the twin arch bridges. Additional services during the construction phase included the proof engineering of design changes and temporary works packages.

The Sydney Gateway project is part of Transport for New South Wales’s (Transport) strategy to increase the capacity of the infrastructure and services in the area surrounding Sydney Airport at Mascot.

Garacad Sea Port

Garacad Seaport is a new container terminal under construction in the town of Garacad in Somalia. The new port has been planned to open up the horn of Africa, central Somalia and the south-eastern region of Ethiopia to more accessible trade routes to the wider world, particularly the Arabian Gulf and Asia.

Rendel’s ports sector, in collaboration with Ingerop Kenya and Ingerop South Africa, is delivering design review services for the development of the port for Wadaagsan Company.

Mersey Gateway Project

The Mersey Gateway Project was a major scheme to build a new six-lane, one-mile toll bridge over the Mersey between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes to relieve the congested and ageing Silver Jubilee Bridge. The new bridge crosses the Mersey about 1.5km east of the Silver Jubilee Bridge. It is a tolled crossing with a maximum speed limit of 60 mph.

Rendel was appointed as a member of the design JV, along with Ingerop and Atkins, to carry out the tender design of the main cable-stayed bridge and the approach viaducts, including the foundations. In addition, Rendel was also responsible for value engineering and the preparation of the bidding documents.

Shah Amanat Bridge

The US$45 million (£29 million) Shah Amanat bridge (previously known as the Third Karnaphuli bridge) is a 950m long bridge comprising three 200m extradosed main river spans, two 115m side spans and a 130m approach viaduct section spanning the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong, the second largest city in Bangladesh.

Rendel was appointed by the China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC) to design the bridge, incorporating innovative design techniques and using the latest software, particularly in relation to the cable supported structure and seismic design.

Sandy Bottom Small Ports Project

Rendel was awarded an Employer’s Representative contract for the provision of specialist marine consultancy services on three new ports facilities to accommodate the new Royal Bahamas Defence Force fleet.

This contract formed part of a US$200m investment by the Government of the Bahamas to upgrade ageing naval infrastructure and its fleet of small patrol vessels. Rendel’s services included provision of procurement and contract advice, a detailed engineering review and construction supervision.

Grosvenor Crescent

Redevelopment of one of the most prestigious addresses in London to create five luxury town houses including three-storey basements.

Rendel was appointed by Wainbridge Ltd and Mace to carry out the geotechnical study for this sensitive work which is being carried out in the busy residential and conservation area of Belgravia in Central London. As well as creating luxurious residential units the basement areas were excavated and fitted out to house private leisure facilities and car parking.
