Hannah O’Donnell

Advanced Mechanical Apprentice

How long have you been with National Gas?

I started my apprenticeship in January 2021.

What are the main tasks in your role?

Throughout my apprenticeship I attended technical training courses across the country as well as completing a HNC in Mechanical Engineering. While on site, I assist in daily maintenance activities as well as helping with project works too. This year I have been involved in a critical valve gearbox replacement, which is still on going and hopefully going to completed by the end of the year.

What does a day in the life look like?

I arrive on site at 07:30 and have a meeting with the whole team to go over whereabouts for the day, ensuring there is no conflicts. I then get any tools and equipment ready for the job in hand and ensure a safe working area before starting the task. Usual jobs we encounter can be process pipework, metering, filter changes, oil/coolant changes as well as a range of other tasks such as rectifying gas leaks and flange protection.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Everyday on site is different, with new challenges and problems to overcome. It is great being part of the team at Bacton and working together to see jobs through is always a rewarding feeling.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a Graduate programme?

To anyone who is thinking about applying for a graduate programme or apprenticeship in National Gas then go for it! With the progression to Hydrogen underway as well as a number of new projects to be delivered, it is an exciting time to be in the company. Getting real experience in the energy sector is extremely valuable and starting your career at National Gas will undoubtably give you the kick start you need for your career in energy.
