Role Overview

Design Engineering (4 Months)

The Design Engineering role supports business strategy, profitable growth and continuous improvement by interacting with customers, interpreting technical specifications and converting requirements into world products and services.

You will work closely with Project Management, Operations, Production, Quality and Supply Chain teams to develop accurate technical documentation and engineering solutions.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing engineering designs and technical solutions.
  • Interpret customer requirements and technical specifications.
  • Produce and maintain engineering drawings, models and technical documentation.
  • Support engineering change and continuous improvement activities.
  • Participate in design reviews and project meetings.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain functions to ensure designs are practical and cost-effective.
  • Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, compliant and completed on time.

Technical Authority (4 Months)

Working within the Technical Authority function, you will develop an understanding of engineering governance, standards and compliance requirements.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Support technical assurance activities across engineering projects.
  • Assist with reviewing engineering documentation for compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Participate in risk assessments and technical reviews.
  • Help maintain technical specifications, procedures and engineering records.
  • Work with engineering teams to ensure products meet safety, quality and performance requirements.
  • Contribute to problem-solving and root cause investigations.

Research & Development (4 Months)

The R&D placement will provide experience in innovation, product development and testing of new technologies.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Support development and evaluation of new products, materials or technologies.
  • Assist in planning and conducting laboratory or workshop testing activities.
  • Analyse and interpret test data.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations.
  • Participate in prototype development and validation activities.
  • Contribute ideas for product improvements and innovation projects.

This placement offers an excellent opportunity to gain broad engineering experience, develop professionally and make a meaningful contribution to a high-performing engineering team.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience using CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Creo or similar).
  • Understanding of engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Experience of engineering projects through university coursework or extracurricular activities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Personal Characteristics

  • Currently studying towards a BEng or MEng in General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Seeking a 12-month industrial placement as part of your degree.
  • Strong interest in engineering design, technical problem solving and innovation.
  • Good analytical and organisational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
