"GE invests a lot of time and money on training for all employees and the representatives for the intern programme are second-to-none with the level of support they provide us."
Six months ago I was a fresh faced university student who thought he knew all - boy was I wrong! Sometimes universities lull you into a false sense of security over the real world technology that we are facing in the ever-changing world that is IT - but GE soon shattered this mirage.
So far through my internship, I’ve been working on projects which impact hundreds of thousands of users and every single business unit, including being part of the team who are rolling out the new VPN service across GE globally while also leading the software deployment of the client. So long were the days that all you were expected to do as an intern is make coffee and photocopy documents!
However, don’t be scared off because of the lack of knowledge. GE invests a lot of time and money on training for all employees and the representatives for the intern programme are second-to-none with the level of support they provide us - they are definitely number one for leadership programmes for a reason.
When it is time to go back to university, I will definitely go back a changed person and hope to utilise a lot of skills and knowledge I picked up throughout my year at GE to succeed in my university degree and hopefully work towards a graduate role in the IT Leadership Programme (ITLP) run by GE.
I know that a lot of university students are hesitant when applying for an internship but I suggest applying straight away - university can teach you how to learn, but GE helps you build as a person.
