After graduating from the University of Surrey in 2020 with a Master’s in chemical and Process Engineering, I started the graduate scheme at BOC in February 2021 working on a special gases site in Immingham. In this role, I learned about cylinder filling processes as well as working on small projects.
In September 2021, I moved to the production site at Margam in an operations role on the Air Separation and Hydrogen reforming sites in South Wales. I had responsibility for completing the monthly safety reviews, installing efficiency and compliance projects, as well as learning about site operations.
For the past year I have been working in Process Safety engineering, mostly performing Hazard and Operability studies & Layers of Protection Analysis, and performing consequence modelling.
The variety of roles on the graduate scheme, the amount of different learning opportunities, and being able to get hands on experience working on production sites which many engineers don’t get the chance to do. Having experience in different parts of the business has helped me gain a broad range of knowledge and decide where I would like to focus my career.
Take as many opportunities as you can to give you experience in different areas!
