First Tech Robotics Challenge

Added: Over a year ago by Subsea7

Last month one of our Graduate Engineers, Daisy Wang, was invited to attend and represent Subsea7 at the First Tech Robotics Challenge held at Harris Academy in Sutton. Subsea7 are currently sponsoring both robotics teams from Harris Academy and we are delighted to say that both teams have now qualified for the Nationals which are to be held in London later this year. We asked Daisy to tell us a bit more about the competition:

"I served as a guest speaker, sharing my journey from a STEM student to an engineer at Subsea7, inspiring students to pursue their passions in technology and engineering. Additionally, I took on the role of a field inspector, ensuring all participating teams met the required standards, checking that their robots were up to date with the latest software and ensuring they knew how to operate and power their robots correctly.

The competition was intense! The task for the robots was to score as many points as possible within a few minutes. Robots had to pick up blocks, mimicking subsea objects and place them into specific zones such as baskets at different heights.

In the qualifier, teams were paired up into alliances to compete against each other in rotations. The Harris Academy teams paired up and I have to say, their strategy was brilliant! Their teamwork was laser-focused, each robot nailed its task, points racked up quickly, and they pulled ahead. Even when other teams tried to sabotage them, the Harris alliance worked together, with one robot protecting the other to make sure every point counted.

The Harris Academy alliance wiped out the last competitors and won the regional qualifier! It was an incredible competition. I witnessed true engineering brilliance and smart use of each robot’s strengths. I was so happy to be a part of it, not just sharing the joy, but feeling proud of our future generation."

We are very proud to have Daisy, who represents our CAE team, embracing technology into our business and projects. She has truly shown a passion for nurturing the next generation of “techy engineering graduates” as well as encouraging more diversity into engineering with this STEM outreach.
