Life as an Intern

Hello! Please introduce yourself.

My name is Andres Gonzalez, and I am a Subsea7 intern in the Pre-Comm/Fleet and Equipment group. I’m a mechanical engineering technology student in my senior year at the University of Houston.

Why did you choose to intern with Subsea7?

I hadn't learned a lot about subsea energy intervention and became immediately interested in it when I heard about it. It is not a topic I have had any courses in so I felt like I could really learn about a whole new way of engineering that brought on new problems given the tough environment that is below the ocean floor as well as the problems that must be solved onshore.

I think Subsea7 is very interesting as it is a global provider of subsea engineering projects. Being global means the opportunity for me to connect with people all over the world and the one thing in common we have is engineering and the idea that we can always find a way to do something better. If there is something I have already learned in my short time at Subsea7, it is that collaboration not only leads us to multiple solutions, but helps us navigate towards the best one.

Fortunately, I have grown up speaking two languages and have managed to become somewhat conversational in Portuguese with the help of being fluent in Spanish. I hope that at Subsea7 this will allow me to connect with many engineers from all around the world and motivate me to continue my language learning journey allowing me to “speak like an engineer” in different languages.

What are you most excited to learn about this summer?

Being that I’m in the pre-comm group, I am very excited to learn about our part in the whole cycle that is mobilisation and demobilisation. I am excited to learn all the different techniques we use to execute a project and how we make sure we are doing it as safely and as efficiently as possible. Having only been here for a couple of weeks, I am already grateful that I can at least sit in a room amongst problem solvers and listen to and watch how they combat tough situations. I know that what I learn in this internship will greatly improve my skills as an undergraduate engineer and will kickstart my path towards being a part of a team who solves problems.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself working in the energy sector with a great team that is led by its motivation to complete exciting projects around the world. Whether I am overseas or at home in Houston, I know that there are great engineers to work with and especially to learn from.
