About the role

We are currently sourcing candidates who have recently qualified with a degree in a Safety, Health and Environmental related subject and who are looking to build their knowledge and experience in exciting and varied sectors across the construction industry.

Costain offers an excellent opportunity for SHE Graduate’s to work across numerous sectors including Water, Rail, Highways, Integrated Transport, Aviation, Nuclear, Energy and Oil and Gas. This allows for fast progression and experiences meeting different clients, contractors and cultures in different locations across the United Kingdom in cities and rural areas.

As well as the Costain Graduate Scheme the SHE Team offers the SHE Academy which is a mixtures of SHE trainee’s, apprentices and Graduates. The group meeting quarterly at different locations; twice at Costain projects and twice at external companies to understand how other industries operate and understand SHE.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand the Company Health & Safety and Environmental (SHE) Policies and Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company’s operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented.
  • Support the SHE Manager in reviewing, updating and implementing all MSP specific SHE procedures, guidance notes, training and appointment matrix etc.
  • Assist and provide advice to Contract Management in the understanding of stakeholders (internal and external) aims, priorities and risks with regards to SHE
  • Assist in providing advice on the practical implementation of the company’s SHE policies and processes
  • Gather and analyse data, prior to sharing with the operational team and supply chain
  • Building relationships with the SHE and operational teams, client and supply chain
  • Support and undertake SHE Advisory Visit, Inspections and Audits where required of operational sites
  • Research Safety, Health and Environmental Issues and best practices as directed by the SHE Manager or delegate
  • Assist the SHE team, with the review of SHE risk assessments and Method Statements
  • Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of SHE performance. Utilise data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation, and intervention
  • Provide administration support regarding organising SHE meetings, training etc, as requested by the SHE Manager
  • Assist and support the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed by the SHE Manager
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of SHE training/briefings, as directed
  • Set standards and lead by example in the management of SHE
  • Maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relations to SHE Management and responsibilities including appropriate qualifications and professional membership
  • Obtain competency cards in line with the company Competence Card Compliance Standard

Costain’s Graduate Development Programme 

The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job, this will include specific technical training in relation to your specialised discipline.

The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond.

We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.

Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way. 

In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership. 

Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels

About you:

  • BSc in Health & Safety Management Or Health, Safety and Environment Management Or Environment Management Or equivalent
  • Under graduate study or equivalent diploma that gains IOSH Technical Safety Practitioner
  • Experience of writing and delivering presentations, talking in public etc
  • Excellent organisations, communication, and time management skills
  • A passion of Safety, Health and Environment
  • Able to work on own initiative when required as well as in a team
  • Computer literate
  • Provide pragmatic solution to ensure work continues safely, when required
  • Having creative and innovative solutions
  • Mobility to work on various projects over the 2-year programme throughout the UK - UK Full Driving Licence Essential

As some of our project sites are based in remote locations, it is worth noting that you will be required to have the ability to travel to site 

Location

We are looking for candidates who are willing to locate to a variety of locations across the UK where they can develop and extend their skills and capabilities in this exciting discipline.

*Please note that final locations for the roles will be discussed at interview and finalised, depending on the candidate and business need at the time.
