Graduate Electrical Design Engineer

Job Purpose:

Producing electrical engineering designs on NAMP and Connection projects, under supervision of Design Lead. These designs will be developed from scopes provided by CP Delivery team, Asset Management or Connections. They will include project costings to customer requirements for time, quality and budget.

The role will liaise with the Project Manager, Principal Designer, internal and external designers and all others involved in the design process, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and relevant UKPN standards for designs for all customers.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • A graduate engineer with a bias in electrical engineering. Knowledge of power system, plant and protection systems at 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, and intermediate voltages.
  • Competence in resolving a range of technical power engineering issues and demonstrating a sound understanding of the company and distribution networks and an appreciation of recent technological developments in distribution plant and equipment.
  • An understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and their application in this role.
  • A good level of business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory awareness;
  • Knowledge of the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 procedures

The Programme:

Year 1:

The programme begins with an eight-week induction during which time you will gain an in depth insight into our business and will also receive training in additional areas such as finance, accounting and successful negotiation.

You will also attend some engineering specific courses to introduce you to the technical aspects of our industry.

Throughout your first year you will have a home base location which for this role will be our Colchester office. You will divide your time during this year between your home base and shorter rotational placements in other business areas across the network.

Year 2:

In your second year, you’ll then progress into your first supported role in the business which will see you based at your original home base location. During this time you will continue to be part of the graduate programme and will receive all of the mentoring and support you need to ensure you succeed. You will gain valuable work experience – not to mention the opportunities you need to gain the professional qualifications to become a future leader in your field. What’s more, we’ll provide you with a Chartered Engineer mentor, as well as funding and enabling your membership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).

At the end of the two years, you will then have the choice to continue working in your home base location and business area or at another location. Our graduate career progression policy will ensure that you continue to be supported in your professional development.

Over the course of the programme, you’ll be reviewed on a quarterly basis to monitor your progress and development. You will also have access to exciting opportunities such as attending external industry conferences and site visits.
