Our summer internship schemes are for a period of 8 to 12 weeks, during which, you will have the opportunity to work within one of our sectors.

There is a high demand to transform the energy sector and to achieve carbon and resilience targets to which accessible, efficient and flexible transmission and distribution networks are critical.

Our Energy Unit delivers projects to a wide range of clients across the energy sector on a range of large-scale projects providing support such as general energy projects, transmission and distribution, power generation, renewable energy, and nuclear power.

Joining us you will have the opportunity to get involved in high profile projects within the industry and to develop engineering knowledge across structural engineering and the wider civil aspect.

You will be working with a multidisciplinary design team to deliver front end engineering design and detailed design of energy projects. As an summer placement engineer, your work may include:

  • Producing design of civil works and buildings (steel or concrete structure) to Eurocode or British Standards using structural design software and hand calculations.
  • Producing design calculation reports
  • Producing 2D drawings and 3D BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling
  • Attending design review meetings as required
  • Site visit/survey/meetings as required
  • Providing support to the team with any other tasks given by the project or team lead

You’ll be working with graduates, experienced professionals, and other students so an internship with us is the perfect opportunity to learn from a variety of people while understanding our values and culture. It’s also a great chance to get involved with real projects while gaining relevant experience.

We do not have a formal structure for our internships so you can really make the role your own. The more you get involved and the more questions you ask, the more you will gain from your experience with us.

Candidate Specification

To join us for a summer placement you must currently be at university and studying a degree in one of the following subjects:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Engineering science with a specialising in civil engineering
  • Structural (Advanced) Analysis

We are looking for students with the following characteristics:

  • A methodical approach to problem solving
  • The ability to use your initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and team members.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail with the ability to demonstrate accurate technical drawings and good report writing.
