Subsea Technologies

In the Subsea Technologies department, we design and build vehicles that are used exclusively below the water surface.

Royal IHC Wet Test

The vehicles supplied by Royal IHC are predominantly used in the offshore energy and telecommunication sectors to bury pipes and cables below the seabed surface.

The vehicle range covers large subsea ploughs, jet sleds and large complex tracked trenching vehicles.

We've completed and begun work on a number of exciting design and build projects:

  • At the beginning of 2022, Royal IHC designed and built from a blank sheet of paper a 15-Ton jet sled capable of creating a 6m deep trench by 1.6m wide for the burial of large gas pipes. This trench is created by pumping large amounts of pressurised water into the seabed via long jetting swords.
  • Shortly after delivering the jet sled, we completed the design and build of a jetting system that was installed on an existing plough
  • By the end of the 2022 we had also completed the detail design of a bespoke 120-Ton Diamond mining vehicle that will be used within a submerged mine to dig up and recover huge amounts of Kimberlite (the host matrix for diamonds). This project will continue as Royal IHC will build the vehicle in the Port of Blyth facility.

We started 2023 with a brand new plough order for our 3m multi-depth fibre optic cable plough and a number of incredibly interesting enquiries. In addition to working on secured orders, Royal IHC are proactively developing new vehicles to service an expanding Market.

Royal IHC are looking to develop two new class leading subsea tracked trenching vehicles along with a new to market top loading power cable plough.

As part of the Subsea Technologies engineering team, you could be involved in all aspects of the design and build stage. There would be opportunities to work at the bid creation stage then move the into the detail design stage and finally into the build, commission and test phase of the project. This provides an unparalleled experience for a graduate engineer to take part in full design and build life cycle of bespoke subsea vehicles.
