I studied a Masters in Naval Architecture at the University of Newcastle which focused on the design and operation of ships and other large floating structures. Although the course was marine related, it provided a broad engineering education with subjects including mechanics, structures and electrical systems.
After graduating, I secured a graduate position within an engineering design consultancy and worked on a variety of projects across sectors such as offshore wind, oil & gas and defence. The role involved office-based engineering tasks however I often completed offshore surveys and assignments onboard ships or other floating assets. A notable project was a damage survey of an oil rig that had ran aground.
I was first introduced to Royal IHC as they were a client of my previous employer. I was extremely impressed by the sheer scale and technical complexity of their pipe lay towers and this attracted me to the company. I secured a position as a Design Engineer in 2019 and I have worked on a wide range of design and build projects including cable lay deck spreads and installation jigs.
During a recent project I had the unique opportunity to see the project through its full life cycle from concept to client handover. I worked as part of the design team completing the engineering design, fabrication drawings and supporting the factory build and commissioning activities.
I also travelled to Japan for 3 weeks to oversee the install and commissioning on board the vessel. I recently secured a Project Engineer role within the company which is part of the Project Management function. In this role I support the delivery of projects to ensure they are completed within specification, schedule and budget.
