If you want work experience that really counts, consider a placement with Phillips 66. We are now looking for a student who is working towards a degree in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, Electrical, Electronics or Instrumentation and Control to join us for a one-year industrial placement in 2020.

Your time will be spent either on specific projects or working alongside our experienced Engineers. You will be assisting with the provision of Instrumentation and/or Electrical engineering support for the refinery and its associated off site facilities.

As an I&E Engineering placement student you will get the opportunity to work on a variety of real-life projects within the Instrumentation and/or Electrical engineering field depending upon your skills or preference. You will get to work alongside industry experts in measurement and control systems, analysers, safety instrumented systems, electrical devices and electrical infrastructure. The placement is designed to help you gain the essential skills to have a successful career in industry.

Your assignment will normally be spent with one of the refinery discipline teams, i.e., electrical and/or instruments. Please indicate in your cover letter in which of these discipline teams you would prefer to work and an explanation as to why. Failure to do so may result in your application not being considered.

You should be available to commence your placement September, 2020.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Performing non-routine technical assignments of limited scope
  • Performing entry-level tasks/projects designed to provide disciplinary and interdisciplinary experience
  • Developing procedures for implementation on small projects
  • Preparing technical reports on small technical studies or projects
  • Undertaking independent studies, analysing, interpreting, and making conclusions on small projects or tasks.
  • Assisting senior engineers in complex analysis and assignments
  • Understanding and utilising the relevant company management systems
  • Communicating effectively with relevant stakeholders as required
  • Demonstrating awareness and commitment to safety
  • Participation in the I&E Engineering technical presentation event.



  • The legal right to live and work in the UK on a permanent basis without restrictions.
  • Studying for a BEng or MEng in an Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, Electrical, Electronics or Instrumentation and Control related degree, expecting a 2:1 classification or higher on completion.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience of Microsoft office applications
  • Logical approach to fault finding
  • Good communication skills
  • Effective team player
  • Self motivated and ability to work on own initiative
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities.


  • Previous work experience in a related discipline.
