Julian

Consultant, Space & Defence

In my first two years at RINA Consulting Defence Ltd. I have been involved in a plethora of safety related projects and have further increased my basic and technical knowledge of various safety processes and how to manage a product/ service from the start of its lifecycle to the end via safety engineering.

The specific areas I have developed are better understanding of the Defence Standards, Regulations and Guidance to achieve a safe design and achieve ensure that risks for a product/ service are ALARP and Tolerable as the main focus while providing no Risk to Life (RtL).

Within RINA, I have had the opportunity to enhance my rapport with customers while on projects and also improve my career in becoming an official Safety Consultant.

For the High Voltage DC Cables project, for example, I engaged with the customer weekly to ensure that all requirements were captured and that all reports and outputs were delivered before the deadline, leading to a happy customer and thereby further repeat custom for RINA.

Some of the projects I have embarked on include the utilisation of safety processes e.g. ASPIRE Process 17 for the Gazelle Helicopter Project featuring Occurrence Model to model the hazards and probability of events occurring in failure, Bow Tie Design to assess the main hazards and threats and barriers arising from them as well as writing ECERs and ECIDs.

Another project I have worked on is for a military customer to approve that their Night Vision Goggles are inherently safe and prove this via a Safety and Environmental Case Report (SECR) which introduced me to the Claim Evidence Argument method for ensuring that a design is safe and all risks are ALARP and Tolerable.

With RINA Consulting’s support, I am able to use my Aerospace Engineering Degree to become a professional Safety Consultant and with my expenses paid for the RAeS, I am looking to complete my IEng by the end of the year and work towards my goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer.
