Purpose of the job:

Responsible for a range of electrical, control and PLC tasks relating to the deployment of Crown’s bespoke factory manufacturing execution system (SmartLine), mainly within our European Beverage business.

  • Experience of factory level network communications preferably involving automated high speed data collection.
  • Some experience with data analytics and worked with MES projects would be ideal.
  • Proven ability to meet challenging deadlines and targets within a dynamic project and factory environment.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Responsible for plant surveys and detailed design proposals that establish the scope of work required in each plant for installing SmartLine/Production Order Control.
  • Determining the communications route for transfer of data between machine and line control PLCs to SmartLine.  
  • Implementing the required PLC program and hardware changes in conjunction with plant electrical teams according to approved plans.
  • Validation of data collected from PLC and server.
  • Design activities will involve: 
    • Interfacing with instrumentation and sensors specified for machine and process control.
    • Data capture and validation.
    • Designing and implementing PLC networks. 
  • Programming a range of PLCs including Allen Bradley, Siemens and Omron. 
  • Gather feedback and analyse current usage of SmartLine to promote ideas for systems improvements.

Person specification

Professional and academic qualifications    


  • Educated to degree level or an equivalent higher level qualification in electrical and control engineering or closely related discipline is preferred.


  • Qualifications will be considered in conjunction with relevant knowledge and experience.

Previous experience


  • Minimum 1 year proven ability in the design and commissioning of control and electrical systems for machines and high speed production lines
  • Experience of the design process from specification through to implementation and final validation
  • Working knowledge and an understanding of electrical schematics, PLC logics & HMI designs


  • Experience in designing and deploying SCADA, MES or any production line awareness systems

Skills and competencies 


  • Passionate about the timely delivery of high quality technical solutions
  • Self-driven with the proven ability to work autonomously, leading and implementing tasks to achieve critical deadlines
  • Familiarity with industrial sensors, instrumentation and control


  • Ability to see through the data and analyse it to find conclusions.
  • Build systems to transform raw data into actionable business insights

  • Proven ability to work effectively within a technical team
  • Promotes and upholds exemplary safe working practices at all times
