"You are allocated a buddy on your first project to help you settle in."

I was attracted by the chance to work on a variety of different projects in different sectors of engineering. All this is completed within a well-structured programme that is fully supported by everyone within the company.
Excelerate to me is a scheme to produce the next generation of leaders for John Sisk & Son.
The recruitment process was straightforward and easy to follow. Added to this the assessment day was the best I experienced.
You are supported throughout by a mentor who is assigned to you on your first day, and stays with you throughout the programme. You are also allocated a buddy on your first project to help you settle in and explain any day-to-day things you may need to know about how the company operates.
So far my best experience has been working as the Site Manager for the refurbishment of our new office building for the Solihull branch, whilst on my placement there. This was a fantastic introduction to what is required to run a successful site, but on a smaller more manageable scale.
Currently I am working as a Site Engineer for structures on the A19 junction improvement project. A typical week involves attending the daily briefing every morning and then heading out on site. Then it can involve anything from the setting out and surveying of structures to supervising Sub-contractors. As well as this there is a lot of paperwork to be maintained relating to the health and safety on site, which is very important and I am also responsible for ensuring all our survey equipment is maintained and calibrated.
The most challenging thing for me is the sheer volume and range of things to learn whilst trying to remember as much as I can.
My advice would be to be yourself throughout the recruitment process and don’t try to be who you think the company is looking for.
