Planet

Our success depends on a healthy planet. We're working hard to use natural resources with care, reduce waste and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Why are we taking action?

The food systems that we rely on are in trouble. They’re threatened by the climate crisis, deforestation and the overuse of natural resources. It’s important that we play our part in solving these problems.

Today, we’re already making a difference. Our greenhouse gas emissions are nearly one-third lower than they were four years ago.

Good planning and giving surplus food to good causes means we create less food waste. We’re also proud to sell ‘wonky’ fruit and veg.

To tackle plastic pollution, for example, we were the first supermarket to use paper ‘bags for life’ instead of plastic, and we have acquired a stake in a new recycling site in Fife.

And we’re taking care to buy our food in a way that doesn’t damage forests or ecosystems.

Our targets

Morrisons has plans to go much further to protect our planet. Here are some of our targets:

  • Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations by 2035
  • 50% cut in food waste by 2030
  • Zero deforestation in ‘forest risk’ supply chain areas (which cover palm oil and soy) by 2025
  • 100% of cotton in our own-brand clothing will be ‘Better Cotton’ by 2025
  • 50% less plastic packaging in our products by 2025

What we've done so far

  • 10MW of solar energy installed at our sites
  • 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations since 2019
  • 176 million plastic bags a year replaced by paper bags for fruit and veg in our stores
  • 11,000 tonnes of unnecessary or problem plastic removed since 2017
  • 14% reduction in use of plastic packaging, removing on average, 7,520 tonnes of plastic packaging each year since 2017
  • We sold 34,000 tonnes of ‘wonky’ fruit and vegetables in 2021
