"The time I have spent on the summer placement has allowed me to improve my confidence in my ability as an engineer . . ."
Role: Process Engineer
The time I have spent on the summer placement has allowed me to improve my confidence in my ability as an engineer. I have also developed my employability skills, in particular my ability to manage my relationships with others as I have had the opportunity to work with many different types of people.
I visited the commercial office of Centrica Storage. This gave me an insight into how the business works and why the work that I'm doing as an engineer is important to the big picture, this also helped me keep sight of the company's overall goals.
I found that I had more responsibility and freedom to decide how to go about the work that needed to be done. This improved my employability as I now have practical engineering experience. I have also improved my ability to work in a team and manage my time to cope with different projects simultaneously.
I have found that having responsibility makes you take pride in your own work.
I have improved my performance in managing relationships, particularly my skill to influence and engage others to secure their commitment, as sometimes you are asking people to do something that can put demands on their time.
My placement was based in Hull, which is quite far from the head office, however I have joined some of the other summer interns for a day at the Ascot Races. I have also socialised with people at my work. I have gone bowling, attended people's leaving do's and spent a day at Beverly races on an engineering team building day. My Buddy also arranged a meal for me and her and another two of the graduates working in my office.
