The Data Science Society at the University of Sussex is committed to fostering a thriving Data Science community on campus. Our university has a rich history of interdisciplinary research, and we continue to advance at the forefront of innovation. As Data Science emerges as a dynamic interdisciplinary field, current and future graduates like you will play a vital role in shaping its trajectory.
Our society aims to unite students with shared interests in Data Science, facilitating collaboration and leveraging on-campus resources to develop essential skills and knowledge. Our mission is to promote accessibility, academic excellence, inclusivity, and an engaging experience for all participants in the field of Data Science.
Every year we host a series of Junior Research Associate talks and workshops to encourage any interested students to partake in the University Summer Research Program. A number of successful JRA’s share their experiences and tips. This year we had the pleasure to hear experiences from JRA students from the School of Informatics to Psychology.
Recently we co-organised a Women in STEM event in collaboration with other STEM societies. We organised a panel to discuss the experiences of women within the School of Informatics, STEM in general and their expectations when joining the industry.
We have guest talks from people in industry and researchers alike, to offer students an overview of the wide range of backgrounds people in Data Science can have as well as the variety of applications it has.
One of our favourites was given by Dr Kingsley Sage on the intersection of Music and Data Science - a semi-comedic rendition of informatics meeting the music industry.
All Sussex students get access to past talks through our online platform, so no-one is missing out!
You can find and contact us on any of our socials, but especially Discord.
You can also look at our Canvas Page for Sussex Students where you can find recordings for our talks as well as open data science learning resources.
