Degree Apprentice (L6)

What made you apply to the apprenticeship scheme at Tony Gee?

I have always been interested in engineering and while my earlier career took a different path in the aviation industry, when I couldn’t continue, I had no hesitation in looking for civil engineering roles. Changing career can be quite daunting and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start but the apprenticeship at Tony Gee stood out as it provides a pathway to becoming a civil engineer that provides a blend of learning and experience while also minimising the financial impact of starting again.

When did you join and how has your role progressed since?

I joined in 2021 as a Level 6 Degree Apprentice and I have been involved in many different aspects of project work, from 3D geospatial modelling of designs to Design calculations to British standards and even mentoring of new apprentices. Tony Gee has helped me develop, rewarded me when I have worked hard and have helped me feel valued as an employee.

What excites you most being an apprentice?

It is exciting to see how quickly you can progress as an apprentice with the right support and opportunities afforded to you, I am excited for the future and the projects I will be involved in. I look forward to being given more responsibility and contributing to more complex designs, hopefully I will be able to lead my own project at some point and help develop others that will be in the position I am in now.

What advice would you give to future Tony Gee apprentices?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and try things that you don’t know how to do, there will always be opportunities and support within the company for those that are willing to take the initiative and go beyond what is asked of them.
